China has offered to build a modular nuclear reactor in Serbia, according to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

Serbia will consider all available options regarding nuclear energy, Aleksandar Vučić told RTS during a visit to China, Tanjug reported.

The Chinese offer for a modular nuclear reactor includes very favourable prices, short construction times, and personnel training, he explained.

Small modular reactor (SMR) technology has been developing rapidly in recent years. However, it has not yet reached the commercial phase.

Serbia will discuss the issue further, said Vučić, noting that the country has an agreement with France’s EDF and has also had contacts with Russia. He added that offers have also been received from other Asian countries.

The Chinese offer is very concrete, he underlined.

Vučić also said that the country would discuss the development of nuclear energy with various potential partners.

It is certain that Serbia will have at least two partners, he stressed, adding that everything related to nuclear energy must be done absolutely to the highest standards, Tanjug reported.

In mid-March, the Ministry of Mining and Energy said that all studies necessary for the government to decide on a nuclear program should be completed by mid-2027.
