The potential of distributed solar energy in Azerbaijan remains largely untapped, Javid Abdullayev, director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency, said during a panel session at the 31st International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition in Baku, Report informs.
"The potential of distributed solar generation in Azerbaijan remains largely untapped, yet it represents one of the most promising opportunities for accelerating decarbonization while simultaneously engaging the population and business sector in the energy transition," noted Javid Abdullayev.
At the exhibition, the agency's director also presented the results of a comprehensive and highly accurate analysis of the potential of rooftop solar photovoltaic installations in nine strategically important cities across the country.
"The use of modern satellite imagery, geospatial technologies, and deep learning methods enabled us to achieve unprecedented accuracy in assessing solar energy resources in Azerbaijan's urban areas. The study determined the technical potential of rooftop solar panels in the cities studied to be approximately 9.4 gigawatts, which provides the potential to generate over 11.8 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually. These figures confirm that rooftop solar power generation has the potential to become a significant component of Azerbaijan's future energy balance and significantly contribute to achieving our climate and energy goals. Moreover, the significance of this work far exceeds the numerical figures obtained," Abdullayev added.
