SOCAR Green LLC, a subsidiary of the Azerbaijan State Oil Company (SOCAR), wants to become the largest Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Azerbaijan, said Elchin Targuliyev, the LLC’s expert on solar and wind energy, Renewables.az informs via Report.

Targuliyev made the remark during the Sustainability in the Energy Industry panel discussion organized within the framework of the 30th Anniversary International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition and the 13th Caspian International Energy and Green Energy International Exhibition held in Baku.

According to him, there will be a more liberalized energy market in Azerbaijan, and SOCAR Green is becoming the frontline of this transition: "We want to be the largest IPP in Azerbaijan. We aim not just to be one of the IPPs, but to be Azerbaijan's national energy champion in the energy transition issue. We want to do this with green technologies. We aim to do this with solar, wind, various types of renewable energy, as well as geothermal, bioenergy, and throughout the country, not just concentrated in one location."

The official noted that the company strives to do this with utility and commercial scale projects: "For example, our project with BP and the Azerbaijan Business Development Fund is actually to provide energy to the 'Sangachal' terminal, which is Azerbaijan's largest oil terminal. Basically, we are decarbonizing oil terminals through solar energy, and with this, we produce 500 million kilowatt/hours of energy from solar power in one part of the country."
