Türkiye plans to increase its combined installed solar and wind power capacity to 175 gigawatts (GW) by 2040, with approximately $100 billion in investment envisaged to achieve the target.

Renewables.az reports that Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced the target during the launch of the “National Energy 2040” strategy held in Istanbul on November 5.

The targets were announced by Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar during the “National Energy 2040” launch held in Istanbul on November 5.

Under the new strategy, Türkiye aims to expand its installed solar power capacity from 26 GW to 112 GW and wind power capacity from 15 GW to 63 GW by 2040.

The country also plans to increase its total installed electricity generation capacity from 123 GW in 2025 to 281 GW by 2040. Over the same period, the share of renewable energy sources in total installed capacity is expected to rise from 63% to 77%.

The strategy also places particular emphasis on offshore wind energy development. Türkiye aims to reach 6 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2040, with the first Renewable Energy Resource Area (YEKA) offshore wind tender planned for April 2027.

Alongside renewable energy expansion, the modernization of electricity infrastructure has been identified as a key priority. A total of $116 billion in investment is planned for electricity transmission and distribution networks.

In addition, Türkiye's electricity demand is projected to reach 680 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2040. The strategy also targets an electrification rate of 36%.

According to Bayraktar, the National Energy 2040 strategy aims to strengthen Türkiye's energy security, increase domestic energy production and reduce dependence on imported energy resources.

The country plans to mobilize a total of $500 billion in energy sector investment by 2040.

The new energy targets were announced ahead of the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31), scheduled to take place in Antalya on November 9–20.
