Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov attended the 10th Annual Global Conference on energy efficiency of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Brussels, Belgium, Renewables.az informs via Ministry of Energy.
At the High-level Panel: From Awareness to Ambition to Action and at the ministerial round table, the minister shared his views on the contribution of energy efficiency to the implementation of energy security and global climate goals, as well as the policy pursued by Azerbaijan in this area. The importance of investments, exchange of experience and international cooperation to achieve energy efficiency was emphasized.
It was emphasized that renewable energy and energy efficiency, which are the main pillars of the transition to clean energy, are strategic priorities of Azerbaijan's socio-economic development and modern energy policy. It was noted that a modern legislative framework and an appropriate fund on energy efficiency were created in a short time in the direction of the development of Azerbaijan as a country of green growth with a clean environment. Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said that an exemplary model of energy efficiency is implemented in Karabakh and East Zangazur regions, which were declared a green energy zone by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev: "In these areas, along with smart grids built from scratch, advanced energy efficiency standards and the use of digital management infrastructure, it is planned to build 90 renewable energy stations with a total capacity of 1.6 GW by 2030. At the expense of these stations, up to 1 bcm of natural gas will be saved per year, and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by more than 2 million tons.”
It was also noted that until 2030, green energy projects with a capacity of 6.7 GW are being implemented which includes 2.7 GW for export to the energy system and 4 GW through the Caspian-Black Sea-European Green Energy Corridor. Along with the increase of the share of green energy in the energy capacity installed in our country to 38%, the consumption of natural gas in the amount of 4.4 bcm will be prevented at the expense of these capacities. “The implementation of green energy interconnectors, which will turn Azerbaijan into an important supplier of green energy in the energy transition of Europe and connect the Caspian Basin, Central Asia, Türkiye and Europe, is also among our priorities. With these initiatives, which reduce energy losses, ensure a balance between regional networks, increase the share of renewable energy, optimize production and demand, minimize emissions and strengthen energy security, Azerbaijan will make a significant contribution to increasing energy efficiency in a large region,” the Minister added.
A Joint Statement was adopted at the end of the conference. The statement emphasizes that energy efficiency plays a key role in the global energy transition and notes the importance of strong national and international measures for progress in this area. In light of the goal of doubling energy efficiency by 2030, defined in COP28, and the results of COP29, it is reported that it is time to take more effective steps with approaches based on technological innovation, financial cooperation and social justice.
