Azerenerji OJSC is constructing a new 500/330 kilovolt Navai substation and laying high-voltage transmission lines from there to various directions across Azerbaijan, Renewables.az informs, citing Azerenerji.
According to the information, one of the republic's biggest substations is being built to sustainably and safely integrate 2 gigawatts of renewable energy sources into the power system in Azerbaijan and to function as a main hub substation.
The newly constructed substation and the new 500 and 330 kilovolt high-voltage lines mark the beginning of a new phase in the transmission system. This project actually consists of two stages.
In the first stage, construction of the new substation and its 330 kilovolt side, including 500 kilovolt transmission lines from Navai to Absheron, and 330 kilovolt transmission lines to Bilasuvar and Banka solar power plants is being carried out with AzerEnerji's internal capabilities and partially with funds allocated from the state budget.
According to the implementation schedule, most of the work that began in September 2024 has been completed, and the first stage is planned to be finished by the end of 2025. This will fulfill the obligation to connect the Banka and Bilasuvar solar power plants to the energy system.
In the second stage of this major energy project, the World Bank's financing portion is expected to begin. With the World Bank's credit, the 500 kilovolt side of the Navai substation and the purchase and installation of transformers and related equipment for the substation, as well as the construction of 500 kilovolt transmission lines from the mentioned substation to Mingachevir, including 330 kilovolt transmission lines to Alat, Absheron, and Gobu will be implemented. This stage is planned to be executed over a period of 3 years.
